Paul Robeson (1898–1976) once said: ‘The artist must elect to fight for Freedom or for Slavery. I have made my choice. I had no alternative’. This statement, spoken during a rally for anti- fascist supporters in Spain, was inscribed on his gravestone. He excelled at track and field at Rutgers and held a law degree from Columbia University, but made his mark as an actor and singer, using his talent to promote campaigns against racism and fascism. Alto brings together a program of his finest recordings, showcasing his communicative, impassioned vocal talents in a broad variety of repertoire.
