Born in the (now) Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa, Nathan Milstein began his violin studies at age seven and after fleeing the Soviet Union, eventually made his U.S. debut in 1929 in Philadelphia with Leopold Stokowski. Although he performed and recorded the great Classical and Romantic violin concertos – often writing his own cadenzas for them – Milstein very much enjoyed playing shorter works for the instrument, often adapting and transcribing them himself. This recording, produced and restored by Leslie Gerber and Parnassus, features twenty-six of these encore favourites.
“You won’t find a more magical example of Milstein’s art anywhere…Twenty-six titles in all to relish, savour and return to at will.”
