In 1980, LILI KRAUS made her final commercial recording for Vanguard Classics: an eclectic selection of fantasias spanning the baroque through the early romantic era. While she is most well known for her many recordings of Mozart, her repertoire ranged from the high baroque to the twentieth century, and her last Vanguard session also includes works by Bach, Haydn, and Schubert.
Kraus was one of the 20th century’s most beloved exponents of classical and early romantic piano repertoire. She concertized worldwide and recorded over a span of more than four decades. Her last recordings, made for Vanguard Classics, include three (and a half) discs focusing on Franz Schubert’s piano masterpieces, played with abundant character and technical finesse. Interest in her playing has been greatly revived by several recent big-box reissues.
The present recording, which was recorded in the very early years of the digital era, has been upsampled to 24 bits and completely remastered to remove extraneous intermittent sounds.
