During the 1960s, the American-based label Musical Heritage Society became a leading label for Baroque and early Classical music. While much of the label’s offerings were licensed from European labels, “MHS” produced a number of important releases exclusive to the label, not only in the United States but in Europe. Among these was the first complete recording of Georg Philipp Telemann’s three cycles of “Tafelmusik”, performed by a hand-picked group of musicians from the Vienna-based Tonkunstler Orchestra. This second cycle, recorded under the musical direction of Dietfried Bernet and produced by legendary Vienna-based producer Kurt List – who first came to fame as the creative force behind legendary independent label Westminster Records – was made at a time when “historically informed” performance practice was beginning to wield a strong influence on the performance and recording of baroque music.
Newly remastered in high-definition from archival sources, these much sought-after recordings return to the catalogue for the first time in four decades in the first wave of Musical Heritage Society reissues being co-produced by Musical Concepts.
