William Primrose is acknowledged as one of the greatest string players in the history of recording. The present release brings together two outstanding twentieth century viola concertos – the Bartók Viola Concerto conducted by the composer’s artistic collaborator Tibor Serly (who also completed the work from Bartók’s sketches) and William Walton’s concerto conducted by the composer himself – along with an all-star Mendelssohn Octet featuring such string luminaries as Jascha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky, and two trademark Primrose encores. New remastering by Paul Arden-Taylor and Gene Gaudette reveal these landmark recordings as never before.
