“Spike remarked ‘if you made planned mistakes in musical arrangements and took the place of regular notes in well-known tunes with sound effects, there might be some fun in it’. This ‘fun’ engendered such gems as Dance of the Hours, William Tell Overture, Flight of the Bumble Bee and Liebestraum. Spike also used suggestive humour as illustrated by the censored lyrics in I Kiss Your Hand Madame: this has become a staple game of the BBC’s I’m Sorry, I Haven’t A Clue where lyrics are ‘bleeped’. Perhaps his greatest successes came from merciless lampooning of sentimental ballads and this formula always worked a treat.”
