Cypriot piano virtuoso Martino Tirimo has been a regular presence on the British and European musical scene for over four decades. His white-hot recording of the Rachmaninov Second Piano Concerto and Paganini Rhapsody, made early in his career, were lauded by critics and classical broadcasters when they were first released on LP, and have been highly sought after by piano-philes worldwide. Alto is pleased to release both of these electrifying recordings!
Sergei Rachmaninov was not only one of the dominant virtuoso pianists of the late 919th and early 20th century but arguably the last of the great Romantic composers, whose works are arguable the most difficult in the piano repertoire. Three and a half decades separate the writing of his two most popular works, the sweeping, heart-on-sleeve Second Concerto (1900) and his witty, crowd-pleasing Paganini Rhapsody (1934), yet the stylistic similarities and unerringly compelling sweep outweigh the differences.
“A passionately committed performance… outstanding recommendation!”
– BBC Radio 3
“I enjoyed the whole sweep of his conception, his commanding pianism and complete sympathy with the music… I enjoyed both performances enormously… The recording has an overall sound that is full and rich.”
– Gramophone
“[T]his is the best recording of the Paganini Rhapsody I’ve ever heard”
– Fanfare Magazine
