Nikolaus Harnoncourt was one of the most influential and respected musicians of the twentieth century and a pioneer of the “historically informed performance” movement. His repertoire spanned early medieval music to George Gershwin and his performances and recordings combines scrupulous scholarly research with character and personality. He was a co-founder of the Concentus Music’s Wien with his wife Alice and a circle of early music enthusiasts – a revolutionary ensemble that performed on ancient and authentic reproduction instruments and afforded listeners new insight into medieval, renaissance, baroque, and early classical-era music.
For the first time, his complete discography for two independent American labels – Vanguard Classics and Musical Heritage Society – are available as a complete edition in both Compact Disc and digital formats. The digital download edition includes complete original liner notes, texts and translations, also available from streaming services that support online notes.
