Hungarian pianist Lili Kraus was one of the 20th century’s most beloved exponents of classical and early romantic piano repertoire. She concertized worldwide and recorded over a span of more than four decades. She made her last recordings for Vanguard Classics, including three (and a half) discs focusing on Franz Schubert’s piano masterpieces, played with abundant character and technical finesse. Interest in her playing has been greatly revived by several recent big-box reissues. Her recording of the late A Major and A Minor Sonatas for Vanguard, first issued on LP in 1970, is now available for streaming and download – along with (where available) the original liner notes by musicologist Sidney Finkelstein and an updated biography of the artist.
