Hungarian pianist Lili Kraus was one of the 20th century’s most beloved exponents of classical and early romantic piano repertoire. She concertized worldwide and recorded over a span of more than four decades. She made her last recordings for Vanguard Classics, including three (and a half) discs focusing on Franz Schubert’s piano masterpieces, played with abundant character and technical finesse. Interest in her playing has been greatly revived by several recent big-box reissues. Her recording of the B-flat Major Sonata for Vanguard, first issued on LP in 1979, was among her last recordings, showcasing her phenomenal technical control and incisive, expressive interpretation of one of the towering masterpieces of the piano repertoire – and is now available for streaming and download along with (where available) the original liner notes by Bernard Jacobson and an updated biography of the artist.
