Hildegard von Bingen holds the distinction of being the earliest non-anonymous woman composer in history – a fact made even more remarkable when one considers her only “name” predecessor is Peter Abaelard! She was active as a composer, author, scholar and abbess nine centuries ago. Her music goes beyond chant, introducing melodic structures that set these ancient Latin texts in an expressively dramatic fashion.
This recording is the first of her music sung by the Benedictine nuns of her spiritual “home”, the Abbey of Saint Hildegard in Eibingen.
