Nine centuries ago, Abbess Hildegard von Bingen was active as a writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, and as a medical writer and practitioner during the High Middle Ages. She is best remembered for her compositions – original sacred works from the age of Chant and one of the largest repertoires among medieval composers. With medieval instrumental ensemble Hesperus, Rosa Lamoreaux gives voice to the meditative and ecstatic facets of Hildegard’s music.
“Lamoreaux’s sensitive recital throws new light upon the genius of the abbess. Her voice, pellucid and supple, is perfectly at ease with Hildegard’s demands. The instrumental additions, of other periods and styles, are drawn from the melodies, and musically rather clever.”
