“This set represents a landmark in the performance history of a great work.” – Gramophone

The inimitable voices of soprano Teresa Stich-Randall and contralto Maureen Forrester bring to life the title roles in Vanguard Classics’ recording of Gluck’s operatic masterpiece Orfeo ed Euridice, conducted by the legendary Sir Charles Mackerras conducting the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. The performance combines “old school,” dramatic operatic interpretive style of the mid-Twentieth Century with Sir Charles’s scholarly acumen in an edition that combined the original score and libretto as premiered in 1762 with additions made for the Paris premiere of twelve years later. Here is an Orfeo with dramatic and emotional grandeur, romantic appeal, and passionate musicality.
