The world is rediscovering the music of Florence Price, a prominent Black woman composer who was also a gifted pianist and organist. Her symphonic music fuses the emerging American symphonic style with elements of blues, jazz, and popular music of the early 20th century.
Alto Records is pleased to return to international availability the world premiere recordings of three symphonic works by Florence Price: the symphonic poem “The Oak”, “Mississippi River Suite”, and her Third Symphony, performed by the San Francisco-based Women’s Philharmonic conducted by pioneering woman conductor App Hsu.
