Antonín Dvořák, though best known for his Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” and Cello Concerto, wrote a large body of masterful and tuneful music combining traditional forms with Czech color and melody. The unrevised version of his Piano Concerto is one of the most challenging such works in the repertoire, yet Sviatoslav Richter, one of the greatest pianists of all time and certainly the most famous and popular Soviet keyboard artist, dispatches the work with assurance and abundant character. The recording partners him with Václav Smetáček and the Prague Symphony Orchestras. Richter was also a great chamber musician, and teams up with the legendary Borodin Quartet for an acclaimed recording of Dvořák’s late period Second Piano Quintet.
