Northern Flowers presents a newly remastered digital edition recording of Boris Tchaikovsky’s Piano Quintet and song cycle, The Last Spring, featuring the composer himself at the piano.
Boris Alexandrovich Tchaikovsky (1925-96) was an outstanding composer of the second half of the 20th century. Championed by renowned performers such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Kirill Kondrashin, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Igor Oistrakh, and the Borodin Quartet, Boris Tchaikovsky composed 4 symphonies, 4 instrumental concertos, several symphonic opuses, 6 string quartets, many chamber and vocal works, and various music for film and radio.
A pupil of Shostakovich, Shebalin, and Myaskovsky, Boris Tchaikovsky created his own style and individual musical language. Both works presented in this recording can confidently be called milestones in Tchaikovsky’s career, representing new periods of his work. The Quintet for Piano, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, was premiered by the composer and the Borodin Quartet in 1963, and represents his largest chamber work. The vocal cycle, The Last Spring (1980) came after a four-year period where he only wrote a little music for films, and heralded a new phase in his works, and was premiered by the musicians heard on this recording.
