When the Westdeutsche Sinfonia undertook their first big tour in 1987 the critics were unanimous: “A top class orchestra, immediately making a name for itself with discipline and virtuosity – an elite orchestra.” (Rheinische Post). The foundation of the Orchestra is based on an original concept: leading musicians from eight major orchestras in the western region of Germany make up the “Sinfonia”, the heart of whose repertoire is devoted to classical, romantic and early 20th century works. The Sinfonia and Dirk Joeres are regular guests at international festivals such as the Beethovenfest Bonn, Autumn Festival Bratislava, Budapest Spring Festival, Cheltenham Festival, City of London Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, International Music Festival Herrenchiemsee. At the same time several CD recordings were released to great critical acclaim: “Joeres conducts with great care and attention. ….. The best buy” (Critic’s Choice, Gramophone Magazine London). “Elegant, graceful and witty performances” (Fanfare USA). The BBC Music Magazine selected Dirk Joeres’ recording with the Sinfonia of Johannes Brahms’ Serenades (ALTO ALC 1098) as one of their 100 Top CDs: “an irresistible release”.
For more than thirty years, the Westdeutsche Sinfonia directed by Dirk Joeres stands for “highest Quality” (Kolner Stadtanzeiger), “superb orchesteral playing” (Gramophone Magazine London), and “intelligent, thoughtful programmes” (Suddeutsche Zeitung Germany).
Since 1987 this “All Star Ensemble” has performed in the most important German and international concert halls: from Berlin (Philharmonie) to Vienna (Musikvereinssaal), from Amsterdam (Concertgebouw) to Washington (Kennedy Center).
