Boris Tishchenko

Born in Leningrad on March 23rd 1939, Boris Tishchenko was a Russian and Soviet composer and pianist. He studied at the Leningrad Musical College between 1954 and 1957 and studied composition with Galina Ustvolskaya and piano with Mikhelis. From 1957 he studied at the Leningrad Conservatory, graduating in 1963, during which time he studied composition with Vadim Salmanov, Victor Voloshinov and Orest Evlakhov, as well as piano with L. Logovinski. He then studied at postgraduate level with composer Dmitri Shostakovich from 1962 to 1965. After this course, he taught at the conservatory, becoming a professor in 1986. During the time of the USSR, Tishchenko was a part of helping to secretly deliver the manuscript for Shostakovich’s memoirs to the West. He was the first to win the laureate of the ‘Epokha Shostakovich’ prize created to celebrate the centennial of Shostakovich’s birth in March 2006. He died on December 9th 2010 in Saint Petersburg.
