The transition from the Baroque to the Classical era was largely led by Czech composers, many of whom were affiliated with the “Mannheim School”. Their tuneful and imaginative music paved the way for the chamber and orchestral music of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. The eighth volume of “Baroque Bohemia and Beyond” draws on outstanding high-definition recordings: Simon Murphy and his renowned period-instrument ensemble playing works by Richter and Stamič, and Australian flutist Ana de la Vega performing Mysliveček’s D Major Concerto from her chart-topping recording debut.
“”[Ana de la Vega] is a charming, persuasive [Mysliveček] advocate. … The ECO, too, offer fine support and with a range of tone colours, match de la Vega’s recreative imagination. Pentatone has captured these performances in particularly clear sound. … De la Vega offers the first recording of a Concerto in D by Mysliveček, one that displays the utmost craftsmanship and appeal but nevertheless relies on her fine performance to render it memorable.”

“Authentic instrument ensemble The New Dutch Academy has an international reputation, formed of well-established early music specialists. … [In] string symphonies by the 18th Century ‘Mannheim school’ composers [Jan Vaclav Stamič and Franticek Xaver Richter]… vibrant, energetic and wonderfully secure playing is supported by a sumptuous recording. … Yet there is no loss of detail in the fast music.”
