While many consider Johannes Brahms a conservative composer among the late romantics, Arnold Schoenberg declared him a progressive for his daring use of rhythm and innovative rethinking of traditional movement style and structure. His Cello Sonatas remain monuments in the instrument’s repertoire – music of great depth and, especially in the outer movements, extrovert daring. One of the leading lights among today’s cellists, Marina Tarasove, joins her regular recital and recording partner, pianist Ivan Sokolov, in this recording of not only the two cello sonatas but Tarasova’s transcription of Brahms’ late Sonata in E-Flat Major Op. 120 No. 2, originally written for clarinet (but also “approved” by the composer for viola) – a work that sounds naturally suited to the cello in Tarasova’s hands.
