Sir Charles Mackerras on Alto

In their obituary for Sir Charles Mackerras, The Guardian called him “one of the most versatile, adventurous and generally admired and respected conductors of the past six decades. He boxed the compass of repertory and musical experience in a manner equalled by few, if any, of his contemporaries.”

Mackerras made his earliest recordings at the very end of the era of 78 rpm records, and continued to record regularly well into the era of compact discs and digital multichannel formats. While best known as a champion of Mozart, Czech music, and British works, Mackerras had an unusually large and eclectic repertoire, and made notable recordings of music by Berlioz and Sibelius that are now available on Alto.
