Palestrina: Lamentations of Jeremiah, Book Four

Palestrina for Holy Week Tenebrae

A major part of the Holy Week music cycle, the Lamentations of Jeremiah refer to the prophet’s sorrow at the destruction of Jerusalem, which here becomes an allegorical reference to Jesus’ crucifixion and death.  Palestrina composed these settings, which are rivaled only by the Lamentations by Tallis (available on ALC 1082) and Lassus (available on ALC 1123). Given an excellent (3-star) review by the Penguin Guide, the Pro Cantione Antiqua under the direction of Bruno Turner are (as always) superb.
