Music for Viola and Piano
Soviet Russia’s finest ‘exports’ of viola and piano
Yuri Bashmet and Sviatoslav Richter demonstrate why they are the top practitioners of their craft in this collection of three highly notable compositions for viola and piano by Shostakovich (Viola Sonata Op. 147), Britten (Lachrymae for viola and piano, Op. 48), and Hindesmith (Viola Sonata Op. 11 No. 4). Though nearly 40 years younger than the legendary pianist, Bashmet’s command of the viola matches perfectly with Richter’s ferocious keyboard approach.
