May’s diverse offerings
May features only a few new releases from Musical Concepts, but they are a varied selection. Dmitri Shostakovich‘s bold Symphony No. 4, a powerful work experimenting with the form of the symphony and drawing inspiration from Mahler, is performed superbly by the WDR Sinfonieorchester and Rudolf Barshai. World-renown choir Ex Cathedra contributes an excellently-recorded collection of major choral liturgical works by Antonio Vivaldi. Kathryn Stott has been called “one of the most versatile pianists on the planet, and our two-disc collection of complete Chopin nocturnes proves her mettle. Lastly, we present a title from Britain’s Griffin Records that celebrates the Diamond (60th) Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 22 pieces of music that were performed at the most important celebrations of her life and reign, featuring the superb Westminster Abbey Choir.
