Lassus: Missa Vinum Bonum (‘Good Wine Mass’) with accompanying motets
Superb mass, its melody based on a drinking tune!
The complete mass setting (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, etc.) and accompanying service for one of Orlandus Lassus‘s most thrilling and accomplished ‘parody’ masses. Here the term parody has nothing to do with its modern ironic and comical meaning, but rather a parody mass is one that borrows from an existing piece of music (often secular) as the basis of its melodic themes. Here Lassus adapts a drinking song, the ‘good wine’ an oblique reference to Christ’s miracle at Cana, or the communion wine.
