Grieg & Sibelius Favourites ‘from fjord and forest’

Beloved gems from two major composers

All the major orchestral highlights from two Nordic giants – Edvard Grieg and Jean Sibelius – originating from several albums all receiving the highest acclaim from Gramophone. Peer Gynt, Finlandia, and other favourites are here combined with several lesser-known gems. The result is a disc full of orchestral majesty from these two signature composers. The majority of the selections are conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras – presiding over the New Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra – in the full glow of his legendary abilities. Also contributing to the compilation are Mark Ermler conducting the RPO for the Peer Gynt suite; the Holberg Suite (First Movement) with Yuri Simonov leading the RPO; and Sibelius’s glorious tone poem ‘The Swan of Tuonela’ with Ole Schmidt and the RPO with Geoffrey Brown delivering the solo on cor anglais.
