Google honors Debussy on his 151st birthday
At Musical Concepts we are big fans of “Google Doodles” – the drawings or animations that sometimes replace the Google logo on the company’s search page. These celebrate famous birthdays, holidays, or other important events. Today’s Google Doodle is exceptionally well done, and celebrates the 151st birthday of composer Claude Debussy. This Doodle is an animation that simulates a trip beside Paris’s River Seine on the city’s famous quais, imagining a nighttime turn-of-the-century Paris animated to the melody of his famous and beautiful piano piece Clair de lune (Moonlight) from his Suite bergamasque. If you have not already seen it, you absolutely should go to Google.com to check it out. (After August 22 it will be available by clicking here.)
This timeless piano work has been performed and recorded countless times, but one of the finest recordings of this piece was recorded by world-class pianist Martino Tirimo. In honor of Debussy’s 150th birthday last year, we released a 4-CD set of Debussy’s Complete Piano Works. This cycle has been hailed by the Penguin Guide as “Probably first choice for those wanting… the complete set” and Gramophone Magazine as “one of the finest Debussy cycles on record.” After viewing the Google Doodle for Debussy, please give a listen to Martino Tirimo’s version below. (Feel free to compare; we believe that Tirimo’s rendition is far more stunning and dreamlike than that used on Google’s page.)
