A Very Vocal June (plus Segovia!)

June’s New Releases have a distinctly vocal feel. Two albums feature the solo voice; Arie Antiche presents famed English soprano and early music expert Emma Kirkby on masterpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and The Very Best of Kathleen Ferrier is in honor of Klever Kaff’s hundredth birthday. King’s College Choir, Cambridge, perform majestically on two revered recordings, one of Bach sacred motets and part-songs and also Tudor Masters – Byrd & Gibbons (Penguin Guide Three Stars).

Legendary British choral group Pro Cantione Antiqua present two polyphonic masses and two motets by Palestrina, while Hymns from England is a collection of 23 favorite hymns delivered elegantly and powerfully by the Salisbury Cathedral Choir. The people of Wales are renown as great lovers of song, and the 21 tracks on The Welsh Male Voice Choir Tradition demonstrate the passion of Wales’s lauded Morriston Orpheus Choir under the direction of founder Ivor E. Sims.

Rounding out June’s offerings is a remarkable album of twenty recordings of absolute guitar master Andres Segovia. One of the most influential classical guitarists of all time, Segovia continued to play and perform up until his passing at the grand age of 95. The Maestro is at the height of his abilities in these wonderful recordings of compositions spanning from the Renaissance to the twentieth century.
